New Technology: Bridging the Gaps to the Digital World

Today, we are going to take a look at some of the new technology that is on its way into the market place and into your life.

SixthSense

We will start off with ‘SixthSense’, a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information.

Humans have evolved to sense the world around us using our five natural senses to perceive information and help us make decisions and chose the right actions to take. We now find ourselves in the “Information Age” where, although the miniaturization of computing devices allows us to carry computers in our pockets, much of the information we need to make decisions is not available directly to our basic five senses. Information is confined traditionally on paper or digitally on a screen. SixthSense bridges this sensory gap, bringing intangible and digital information together and allowing us to interact with it via natural hand gestures.

The SixthSense comprises a projector/camera/mirror combo contained within a pendant like device to project information and interfaces to nearby physical objects, track the users movements and transmit to a processor located within the users pocket. This processors software program tracks the users movement and translates them into system commands back to the pendant device.

The SixthSense prototype implements several applications that demonstrate the usefulness, viability and flexibility of the system including; a map application lets the user navigate a map displayed on a nearby surface using hand gestures and allowing the user to zoom in and out or pan using intuitive hand movements; and a drawing application that lets the user draw on any surface by tracking the fingertip movements of the user’s index finger; web browsers, time keeping devices and photo/media viewers to name a few.
The current prototype system costs approximately $350 to build. Now why didn’t i think of that??

More of the Latest “Wow” Gadgets

This video is a quick overview of the latest gadgets and trends from the world of business and technology as reported by Popular Mechanics including:

- The PUR water purification system that instantly renders the most turbid water instantly drinkable,

-  A circulating tumor cell chip: a noninvasive test that looks for cancer using only a simple blood test.

-  A Smart Pen that records audio notes and syncs them with notes handwritten on a special paper.

-  Hand held pull cord generator

-  Aptera: An electric car that has less wind resistance that the side view mirrors on a pick-up truck.  A future hybrid version is expeced to get over 300 mpg.
